OTHER THERAPIES

Acupuncturists use a variety of other treatments such as moxibustion, cupping and guasha. Here’s a little more information. If I think these would help you, I will explain why and what to expect.

moxibustion

Moxibustion is an important part of Chinese medicine which takes its name from moxa, a natural substance prepared from mugwort leaves (Artemisia vulgaris). Moxa can placed on top of an acupuncture needle, directly on the skin, or in a ‘stick’ held over the body, usually over specific acupuncture points or meridians. The herb is then lit and as it slowly smoulders, heat permeates the skin and affects the flow of ‘Qi’ (energy) and blood in the area being treated. It is incredibly nourishing and soothing. It’s often used to help period pains for example, or to generally boost energy.

cupping

Cupping involves applying suction to small areas of the skin through the application of rounded cups. A vacuum is produced in each cup by drawing the air out through a valve. Cupping brings blood to the surface and allows stuck energy or Qi to start moving again. It’s often used for tight muscles and for alleviating coughs. The cups may be left in place or used a in a sliding technique with oil to cover a greater area. Sometimes the suction leaves round marks on the skin. All marks are a normal part of the therapeutic effect of treatment and will usually fade within five to ten days.

guasha

Guasha uses a tool gently scraped over a lubricated area of the body to intentionally create the release of blood under the surface of the skin’. The marks made by the scraping tool used during Guasha are similar to a rash or bruise (but not painful) and are part of the therapeutic effect. According to current medical research, Guasha increases blood flow and produces an anti-inflammatory and immune protective effect that persists for days following a single treatment. Guasha, like cupping, can be used very effectively on sore muscles, but also acupuncture points to move Qi.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do anything before an appointment?

If you have been sent a questionnaire please fill this in in advance and return it ideally at least 24 hours before your appointment, so we have more time to discuss your needs when we meet.

What do I wear?

Loose clothing, preferably a separate top and bottom rather than a dress for example. Acupuncture points can be almost anywhere on the body, so you may need to remove clothing or lift it out of the way. You might like to bring a blanket or shawl to cover yourself, although I can provide these if necessary. Any concerns about modesty are always handled with sensitivity. If there’s a body area you are worried about, there are often alternative points that can be used.

Is disability an issue?

Healthspace in Bishop’s Waltham and Saddle House in Alresford are both fully accessible, but unfortunately the Botley Practice is not. Please mention on your initial form if you have a particular need and we will do our best to assist you.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is considered safe when performed by a trained and licensed acupuncturist. The most common side effect is a small bruise at the site of needle insertion, although this shouldn’t be painful. Serious complications are rare. However we are dealing with the energetics of the body, which can bring about profound change, therefore it is important you disclose your full medical history and any medication or supplements you are taking, to ensure our treatment is entirely tailored to you.

How do you respect confidentiality?

Like any medical body, your confidentiality is respected at all times unless you or someone else are deemed to be in danger. Your data is stored on a system that complies with GDPR regulations and I am registered with the ICO for data protection handling. Please read here for more about my privacy policy.

What do needles feel like?

Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine. You could fit 30 acupuncture needles in a standard hypodermic needle. You will not usually feel the needle going into your skin. However there is often a sensation as the needle connects with the Qi. This can feel like a dragging, heat, cold or tingling. I will be communicating with you about what you are feeling the whole time. Acupuncture needles are completely sterile and are for single use only.

How will I feel after a treatment?

The most commonly reported feeling is one of relaxation. You may be a little tired after a treatment and it’s best not to rush around as your body is trying to rebalance itself. Occasionally you may have other symptoms later that day or the following day, but all likely side effects will be explained to you.

Can I access acupuncture through private health insurance?

The Association of Acupuncture Clinicians has partnered with several insurance companies. Please check their website to see if you are covered here.

What if I need to cancel?

Please let me know as soon as you are able. I will be charged for clinic hire even if a client cancels. Therefore if you need to cancel within 48 hours, the full fee will be chargeable, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
